September 7, 8 and 9, 2009 Santiago, Chile
The Department of School Textbooks of the Ministry of Education of Chile (MINEDUC) and the Valparaíso School of Linguistics at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (PUCV) are pleased to invite researchers, teachers, publishers and textbook authors to this 3-day Conference.
The main goal of the conference is to create a space for reflection and exchange of ideas among those who do textbook research, and also those who design and employ textbooks as a fundamental didactic tools in the process of teaching and learning Spanish language and literature, in Chile and all over the world. Specifically, the seminar seeks to:
- Enable the exchange of research findings that may promote the improvement of the quality of textbooks in the subject of Language and Communication, in terms of its didactic tools design and its treatment of contents, considering new approaches in the fields of language, literature and communication.
- Foster the exchange of experiences and orientations in regards to specific aspects, such as, the development of comprehension and production strategies of spoken and written texts, discourse analysis, language and literature didactics, literacy development, reading habits, etc.
- Encourage debate on the importance and real contribution of the Language and Communication textbook in the development of the linguistic skills necessary to cope with the demands of a globalized world.
- Promote research with a special focus on the design, production, and use of textbooks in the fields of language, literature, and communication.
Conference Organization
- Plenary keynote lectures: 60-minute lectures by visiting scholars, followed by a 10-minute period of questions and discussion.
- Coordinated Panels: a 90-minute discussion of a specific subject by a group of keynote speakers and a moderator.
- Paper presentations: 20-minute presentations of papers, followed by a 10-minute round of questions and discussion.
Call for Papers
We welcome proposals for paper presentations within the broad field of textbook design, use and evaluation. Hereunder, we suggest several themes for submissions. However, paper proposals are by no means restricted to this list.
- Didactics of language and literature in language and communication textbooks.
- Content analysis in language and communication textbooks.
- Textbooks and text comprehension/production.
- Textbooks and literature.
- Textbooks and early literacy.
